Exam Teams - study groups you can join

also known as Study Groups - Exam Teams can be accessed from the Left Navigation at top
Joining a Team - study groups are a super idea. When we looked at the whole Exam Cram concept, for us, the best place to start was at the beginning, so we did. Our effort is grass roots all the way. We sketched some Exam Success Teams ideas, gave them home pages and now we're looking forward to seeing what the community does with them.

Because all partners have LiveID, the easiest way to share Exam resources was to create Live Events for the teams. This gives people an opportunity to study together in their own way. So we did that and put the most important resources, links and feeds from each Team in LISTS here at wigital. IMO, the great promise of Exam Teams is that knowledge can be built up virtually over time and passed on from team to team. Microsoft has built good stuff into Live Events. Put the idea of Events and Exam Teams together and you've got our best effort. It's all here to freely help real people pass Microsoft certifications. No gimmicks, no hype and no money required.

Click a list to check a Team out. Browse through the lists by certification Number to find an Exam Team. Get together with friends, your peers and anyone else when you are ready to start studying Smile
Best wishes on your exam(s),

Welcome to the BASEMENT

STOP HERE! hey, just wanted to let you know it's OK to stop here. You can stay at the ^ top part of the page ^ and get all the content.

Explanation (about spaces.live.com) - The content you find below this point (called modules) can actually be accessed from the "top of the page" using the top Navigation and Links. To explain this, enabling a module at Live.com requires *displaying* that module on the front page (whether it needs to be here or not). So basically, turning on a module means displaying it on the front page and that means we've got a really long front page!

With all that said...you are welcome in the basement. Be careful on the stairs and please turn the light out when you come back up.

Cheers, wigital

Question:

How has the security been enhanced in widows 7?

Answer:

The answer is absolutely yes, but in my review of the microsoft.com/windows7 and technet.microsoft.com areas, I don't see a bulleted list of the new features, changed features, etc. There is some good information at http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/default.aspx

Answer:

Enterprise and Ultimate will have bitlocker just like before

The bitlocker encryption for flash drives - does it also work for external usb hard drives?

Question:

It would be helpful for the question to be repeated - we only hear the answer

Answer:

Thanks for the reminder.

Question:

they do work [bitlocker for USB]

Answer:

yes, thanks!

Question:

I have one question - BranchCache use a hash technology to share files in Branch Office. This hash is based on a file name?

Answer:

Not really the file name, but the hash is generated by the content. Take a look at the comments on this edge post: http://edge.technet.com/Media/Branch-Cache-in-Windows-7/

Question:

but the encryption times are quite big [about 8-1oh for 8oGB drive]

Answer:

Great comment, bitlocker encrypting a drive will take time, the bigger the data the longer it takes

Answer:

It is the same as Vista where you can do fast user switching, but you cannot be logged in simulatneously.

Answer:

The publish screencasts on edge.technet.com

Question:

how will upgrade w7 from bild 7000 to 7022 and ect?

Answer:

Upgrading from the beta to the RC is currently planned to be supported. You should just be able to upgrade.

Question:

What about MS lifecams drviers for 7

Answer:

I would imagine the hardware team is working on those. Lets see what happens with the coming RC.

Question:

Regarding Lifecam drivers.

Answer:

Beta Drivers are available now! Check out my bosses weblog for details: http://blogs.msdn.com/volkerw/archive/2009/01/13/windows-7-beta-drivers-for-microsoft-hardware.aspx

Question:

If I will install Windows 7 RC and then buy Windows 7 final, will I be able to use my earlier Win7 RC installation and change licence key or would I have to do a clean install?

Answer:

Probably not, and most likeyl you would not just a straight change of key I am sure you will want the new bits

Question:

Why has the ultimate extras been removed from windows 7?

Answer:

Really has to do with release cycles and focus, the official statement is this: "Our new approach to planning and building Windows doesn't have the capacity to continue to deliver features outside the regular release cycle," Microsoft said. "While our core development team is focused on building the next release; our sustained engineering team is focused on updates to existing features. As a result, we don't plan to create Ultimate Extras."

Question:

What is the story with Microsoft mobile Device Center on Windows 7? I have upgraded 4 VISTA Ultimate systems to Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows Mobile Device Centr crashes on each one when the computer is booted and 4 different kinds of Windows Mobile Phone are no longer recognized by Windows Mobile Device Center. The Phones are recognized as a storage device however?

Answer:

That item has been fixed in the RC. You will need to upgrade to the new build when it's released.

Question:

How do I make the demo go to full screen??

Answer:

You can hit F5 to toggle between full screen.

Question: sorry, big screen is necesary?

Answer:

You can hit function F5 to toggle.

Question:

upgrading - i've upgraded my vista with w7 build 7ooo with no problem. but it was ultimate to ultimate - don't know how the home edition behave

Answer:

As mentioned earlier, version (ie ultimate to ultimate) are supported. Moving from say home premium to ultimate won't be supported (as in Vista today). You will need to clean install.

Question:

is build 7000 the only version available to test, even though later versions have been leaked to torrent sites?

Answer:

yes that is the only official versio we have released, I would not trust the later versions on bit torrent, there is no way to verify those are legit builds

Question:

Will Windows 7 include Bluray codecs for playback?

Answer:

As far as I can tell, we haven't officially announced the final feature set for Windows 7. Everything I see on this topic is press speculation. I think this will become clearer at RC.

Question:

yes sorry

Answer:

The videos will be available at www.microsoft.com/springboard in a week or so.

Question:

Will PSR support dual monitor view since netmeeting doesn't?

Answer:

No, only on the main monitor.

Question:

is there going to be vhd support for vista - just as it works in w7?

Answer:

Boot from VHD is a Windows 7 Windows Server 2008 R2 feature only. You cannot boot Vista in a boot from VHD.

Question:

Is Media Center still going to be part of Windows 7 Ultimate?

Answer:

Yes.

Question:

I use a three monitor desktop and PSR records all three screens which creates micro pictures is there a way to only capture one screen?

Answer:

No, it only supports one monitor at a time

Question:

Another question about BranchCache - the hash is made from 'content', not a file name, I read this on Edge. Which hash technology BranchCache use?

Answer:

tukasz, I will follow up on that question and get it posted on the branch cache video on edge in the comments section.

Question:

Will I be able to attach voice recordings in psr??

Answer:

Unfortunately, no.

is there a way for any modern consumer to get sp2 rc?

Answer:

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx

Question:

Is Windows 7 going to support WiMax?

Answer:

If you have a WiMax card with appropriate drivers, then yes. This is hardware and driver based.

Question:

Are Beta versions of Win7 available for editions other than Ultimate?

Answer:

No. Sorry.

Question:

Windows 7 and Gaming, Is microsoft currently linking both xbox live and games for windows at this point or are there plans to link both PC and Console Live environments?

Answer:

That would be fun. I have asked for that personally. But you realize we don't comment on something like that. That sort of information will only come from the Xbox team.

Question:

Audio is much better!

Answer:

thanks for the feedback. we made adjustements during the break.

Question:

Will the demo be available with the video download next week?

Answer:

Not unless they are recording with LiveMeeting or a tool like Camtasia. Many of the features he is discussing are at http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/02/26/some-changes-since-beta.aspx

Question:

I've seen live video in Live Meeting -- why not give it a try?

Answer:

Unfortunately, it has to do with the 3D graphics stuff that Live Meeting doesn't support. I'm really very sorry about that.

Question:

The speaker is not sharing the screen I am still seeing slides?

Answer:

Yes, becuase the Live Meeting session forces to desktop to go to basic video mode, the demos won't work.

Question:

Is Windows 7 supporting drivers for Display Port for other than Apple Mac Books and other Apple hardware that has the MiniDisplay port?

Answer:

Unfortunately, we do not do anything around Mac's so that is not a question we can answer.

Question:

Answer:

Unfortunately, this is a limitation of LIve Meeting and not Windows 7.

Answer:

Answer:

We will work on recording screencasts of the demos and posting later.

Question:

Is aero connected with Windows Live ID, still inside the home network, or will it allow me to share things between computers over the internet?

Answer:

Aero features like docking and areo peek are not tied to Live ID at all. If your question was releated to homegroup, no it's not tied to live ID a either.

Question:

based on the one of the email topics we just saw in search future presentation we can think that u downloaded this Win7 version from bit torrent ;)

Answer:

There's no way he is demoing a version from BT.

Question:

How about the tablet PC support in Win 7? It seems some of the cool tools (albeit add ons) in XP, like Ink Desktop, Experience and Education Packs etc., were missing from/for XP. Does Win 7 provide better support for tablet pc tools either as native apps or add ons?

Answer:

We had much better Tablet PC support in Vista than in XP. Without all the features being complete at this time, I cannot say with certainty that we will have all the same features or if we will have more in Windows 7 compared to Vista.

Question:

Will the rc version be feature complete

Answer:

Good question. That would be a great quesiton on the E7 blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/default.aspx

Question:

Is a full backup program now back in ALL versions of 7 (absent in many versions of Vista)?

Answer:

Again, we have not announced the final feature set and where something like that lands in each SKU.

Question:

When will we know who won the technet subscription for the Live Meeting attendees?

Answer:

We will give a few days for everyone to complete the online survey. We will then draw from all completed surveys and notify the winner.

Question:

How many technet subs are being offered to win?

Answer:

I do believe it is one for online attendees and one for in person attendees.

Question:

We all know that u can open zip files in Windows. Will u be able to use RAR files?

Answer:

That would be awesome, especially if you could create them. And even better if you could create a self exracting RAR. But we haven't announced anything like that so I would nto get your hopes up. Another common question is .ISO mounting. I would love to see that as well.

Question:

can you please share that out?

Answer:

Stephen isn't actually sharing anything right now.

Question:

is this info. bar (CPU, RAM, Network ... ) on a desktop a part of Win7?

Answer: Have you seen ResMon? It's killer. See http://edge.technet.com/Media/Windows-7-Screencast-Resource-Monitor-resmon/ for a great demo from yours truly.

Question:

...So is the Action Center the replacement to Vista's Problem Reports UI? - P.S just used the window shake tip from Stephen to clear off my cluttered windows - sweet!

Answer:

It is essentailly a modified version of the Vista's Problem Reports UI. That shake thing is pretty cool!

Question:

In open beta of Win7 if I hover my mouse over Windows Media Player I can only pause and change songs. It would be great if u could also change volume there. Is it included in newer edition of Win7?

Answer:

At this point, we all need to wait and see. I'm in the same boat as you. Harold Wong

Question:

when does the beta expire?

Answer:

August 1, 2009. Run winver on your machine to confirm.

Question:

Will I be able to have more then one taskbar? Like 4 on all edges of monitor

Answer:

No, that is not possible (at least not in the current build)

Question:

When I attempt to use the "Send an issue report" within Win7, it states my Live ID does not have permissions to submit bugs to Connect - how can one get added? (I have a number of bugs I'd like to submit if I can.)

Answer:

Are you a TechNet subscriber or are you using the public download?

Question:

Can I change taskbar length?

Answer:

I have not see that yet, but I would love that as well. I would like to set it at 80% of my desktop (bottom or side).

Question:

Are we getting multiple desktops in Windows 7 ?

Answer:

Nothing has been announced although it is a pretty highly requested feature

Question:

Can you install gadgits in Windows 2008 R2? If so how?

Answer:

You need to add the desktop experience for gadget support.

Question:

can you please share out demo?

Answer:

Just asked, but it is based on AERO. Sorry.

Question:

for all URL for fences: http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Answer:

thanks

Question:

fences is in in beta and its free but after that it will not

Answer:

Thanks for the info.

Question:

What was that program stephen just mentioned? Url perhaps?

Answer:

See the QA log for Fences

Question: This might be a funfest for those present but for those online in the middle of the night, this is beginning to be a complete waste of time - just sales/marketing information, no demos, poor audio and overall unprofessional

Answer:

Thanks for the feedback. We will make sure Stephen, Joey, ect. see that.

Question:

in vista, when using multiple monitors, the task bar was only visible on the main monitor and it did not extend to the second monitor, is that something one can expect in W7?

Answer:

It is the same in Windows 7.

Question:

Not everyone has the beta. When does it expire?

Answer:

Beta expires on August 1, 2009

Question:

yours must be a newer build. my 7000 expries on 7/1/09 @ 3:59 PM (not clear whether this refers to local time or universal)

Answer:

That is correct. The correct expiration is July 1st.

Question:

Where can you find Multi-touch Monitors compatable with Windows 7? I just want add on monitors and not a whole system since I already have a dual quad core desktop with 32G of Ram?

Answer:

Hardware support lists are still being defined. We should have more information shortly after RC.

Question:

I've had issues testing out the Win7 Image Backup when done to a network share. Not when creating but when restoring. Will Win7 improve this tool so a trial test can be done to proove in some test this will work without actually perfoming a restore? Also will you be creating any Live Labs for Win7?

Answer:

We always work on improving the tools. Not sure if this feature will be in the RC build or not. I do know that we will eventually have TechNet Virtual Labs that include Windows 7, but I'm not sure when that will come out.

Question:

How about getting the audio working again ??

Answer:

We are currently on break. Audio will resume when we get back from break.

Question:

What time does today's session end?

Answer:

It officially ends at 1 PM (PST).

Question:

Any way to turn on the print to PDF so we can get a copy of todays slides?

Answer:

Unfortunately, we are not making the slides available at this time.

Answer:

That is not currently supported.

Question:

Have to VISTA ads Signfeld and Gates, I'm A PC etc been turned off because they were not effective or is it just part of the Microsoft cutbacks of a month ago?

Answer:

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. For some reason, I don't get consulted on these topics. :-)

Question:

Are the slidedecks showed here going to be published to download?

Answer:

Unfortunately, no.

Question:

is video on?

Answer: We don't have video. Only the slide decks.

Question:

Is there a place to go to get a list of all the blogs, and sights mentioned today since the slides are not available?

Answer:

I will work on compiling those links and posting to either my blog or to the Springboard site.

Question:

what's the SpringBoard URL?

Answer:

www.microsoft.com/springboard

Question:

can you post the link on Q&A

Answer:

The video is found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd320285.aspx

Question:

You mentioned being able to boot a VHD for demos. Where can I find a step by step guide for preparing and booting a VHD image? Does it work with bothVirtual PC and Hyper-V VHD images? Does it work with the trial software VHD downloads from Technet and MSDN? Can I select between many VHD images at boot time?

Answer:

There will be official documentation on that. Here's a link to a blog site from one of my Candian counterparts that goes into this: http://blogs.technet.com/canitpro/archive/2009/01/13/windows-7-boot-from-vhd.aspx.

Question:

Are there going to be regional launch events for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2? If so where do I go to sign up for the event in my area?

Answer:

Yes. More information will be forthcoming, but we are still pretty early in the process right now.

Question:

Before I asked: Question: Is Windows 7 supporting drivers for Display Port for other than Apple Mac Books and other Apple hardware that has the MiniDisplay port? Answer: Unfortunately, we do not do anything around Mac's so that is not a question we can answer----I was not mentioning Apple because of owning and wanting to run Windows 7 on it, only as a reference to the newer Intel hardware (northbridge for DisplayPort Video on some Desktop mobo's already) that it seems only (for now) Apple's Laptops have available that would likely be available soon on Dell, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Gateway etc Laptops soon also. It is a new USB like (different connnector) video connection mechanism that requires smarter displays to make use of it ...or in the case of Apple, a dongle can provide 1 vga or 1 DVI connector for $30 or 2 DVI's for $100 dongle. Not sure If Dell, HP, etc will do same "mini" connector - perhaps only desktops will have a full size because without "mini" , a miniDisplayPort connector would be too large to put on a laptop mobo.

Answer:

If the hardware vendors come out with the device, they will also provide a driver. Provided they have one for WIndows 7, that will function.

Question:

Will the presentation(s) used today be available for download?

Answer:

We will make the recording available, but we will not post the PPT decks.

Question:

So USMT is actually going to be as good as the ForensIT tools and can be used for domain user accounts? The single workstation tool in Vista is called Easy Transfer not 'data transfer' as the presenter called it.

Answer:

I don't have hands on experience with ForensIT so I can't speak to that. USMT will work with domain accounts.

Question:

I have noticed that NVIDIA and AMD Video driver updates with substantial improvements in the Performance Index and features show up at the vendor website multiple munths before they get into Windows Update. Is there any way to shorten the testing and approval cycle so i can get these improved drivers through Microsoft instead of going to the hardware vendors?

Answer:

In order for the driver to get published to the Windows Update site, they have to go through additional verification and that process usually does take time.

Question:

Will there be a way to upgrade Server 2008 Core installations to R2 Core? ...and a Core Hyper-V Role to Hyper-V 2.0?

Answer:

I would assume we will support that. I have not tested it myself to know for sure. I will ask Joey when he starts taking questions. Stay tuned for his answer ...

Question:

Will PowerShell be able to execute scripts on machines encrypted with BitLocker?

Answer:

So long as you can access the machine, you can use PowerShell.

Question:

shouldn't it be called the worst practice analyzer then?

Answer:

I guess it depends on how you look at it, right??

Question: just saw a presentation from MVP Jeremy Maskowhatzhisnamowitz on his production of tool that plays further off of GP Preferences - PolicyPak - looks powerful

Answer:

Yes, that is indeed a great product.

Question:

Powershell 2.0 in Win2008 can coexists with any previous version Powershell?

Answer:

You cannot have multiple versions of Powershell coexist on the same server.

Question:

Is a grahpical powershell an oxymoron? This is a great direction and having community integration is equally empowering.. The demo of this looks a lot like SQL query functionality.

Answer:

Maybe, but this is what customers have been asking for and we are listening.

Question:

What is the name of the server product? Is it Windows Server 7 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2 or just Windows Server 7?

Answer:

Windows Server 2008 R2

Question:

Is Windows 7 just Vista R2? What I am asking is "Is win7 a major release"?

Answer:

I guess you can look at it as Vista R2 since it shares a common code base. Usually from the client side, we don't look at it that way so I would consider it more of a major release for the client.

Question:

With Windows Server 2008 SP2 just about ready to release don't you think people will get Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2008 SP2 confused?

Answer:

I honestly haven't thought about that, but I sure hope not.

Question:

Just a note, Many thanks for your open and honest answers which we have all been recieving? Must be tedious answering the same questions over again.

Answer:

You're welcome. Luckily, during the earlier portion of the morning, I had some team mates like Keith Combs, Dan Stolts and Matt Hester helping to answer questions.

Question:

Niiiiiiiice, does it inclue Exchange options?

Answer:

No, does not include Exchange information.

Question:

oh I was all built up for no tabs and then he scrolled down :)

Answer:

We couldn't completely remove the tabs, you know. :-)

Question:

Will it be included in the future?

Answer:

That is a decision the Exchange Team has to make. Right now, I don't see that happening.

Question:

Great new features!! But you should really integrate Exchange. Please...

Answer:

Once again, that is an Exchange team decision, not a Windows Server 2008 R2 decision.

Question:

then can someone clobber the Exchange Team for making their managment UI less admin friendly by putting too much on power shell

Answer:

Exchange 2007 management is 100% based on PowerShell. They then wrote a GUI that essentially calls the CMDLETs. Most of the day to day management tasks for Exchange can be done via the GUI.

Question:

When Server 2008 R2 is released will you be able to upgrade SBS2008 and EBS 2008 servers or will you have to wait for a custom SBS2008 R2 and EBS 2008 R2?

Answer: SBS and EBS is an integrated solution. You cannot upgrade the OS of SBS2008 or EBS2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2 and still have tightly integrated all-in-one solution.

Question:

We ask, You deliver? Is that also the Exchange team's motto? Exchange in AD please!

Answer:

You can always send them feedback.

Question:

Is there a BPA or other tool that will examine a network and identify routers, hubs, nics etc that are and are not IPV6 compatable?

Answer:

I am not aware of one that we create. The challenge with a tool like that is whoever writes it also needs to know about all the different vendors and how those vendor's products communicate.

Question:

Can SQL 2005 run on Server 2008?

Answer:

Yes.

Question:

What is the Eval Link again?

Answer:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=eBcUcC6Ae4CHorisbfizKg_3d_3d

Question:

This meeting seem to have bot a on premise and Live meeting component. Are there going to be similar meetings in other parts of the country? If so where is the schedule?

Answer:

That is the plan. This was the first one where we did the simulcast with the on premise and we will take the learnings and see how we can do this again and make it better.

Question:

any chance you could again show the branch cache overview slide (maybe 6 slides back)? The one prior to the animated slides.

Answer:

On that slide now

Question:

Which versions of 2008 support branch cache and which versions can be used for which role?

Answer:

R2 Enterprise

Question:

thank you all very much. nice presentation

Answer:

Thank you for joining

Question:

thank you - very nice typing today I might add :)

Answer:

Thank you for your patience as well.

Question:

Has this now finished?

Answer:

Yes. Please fill out your online survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=eBcUcC6Ae4CHorisbfizKg_3d_3d

Question:

Will this presentation be made available online?

Answer:

The recording of the Live Meeting session will.

Question:

Is this link being sent to my email address

Answer:

It will be sent to the email address that you registered with. I will also post the link to my blog: blogs.technet.com/haroldwong

Question: I need confirmation - AppLocker is avaiable in Ultimate and Enterprise SKU's of Windows 7, so in Professional edition I can use Software Restrioction Policies?

Answer:

AppLocker is not available in Pro. Enterprise and Ultimate only.

Question:

Thanks for a great presentation!

Answer:

Thank you.

Question:

If the branch hosted cache server fails is the cache of the data lost?

Answer:

Yes In the hosted scenario that would be the case.

Question:

Thanks for the session, looking forward to the archived version so I can view it again and digest more

Answer:

Thank you. Keep an eye out for my blog: blogs.technet.com and we will also follow up with an email.

Question:

the keys and CDs that were just mentioned on the audio, are they build 7000 or later?

Answer:

7000 only.

Question:

What is the Session ID/Title?

Answer:

This title is MSDN and TechNet Unleashed (in conjunction with STEP): Windows Vista to Windows 7

Question:

Will I be able to connect to Windows 7 Home editions vis Remote Desktop?

Answer:

Not that I'm aware of.

Question:

The last five questions in the survey will not allow you to use the same rating for more than one question so I had to rate some things lower than I wanted to just to get the system to accept the survey.

Answer:

Not sure why, but it is working just fine for me.

Question:

Survey seems to have a bug. Can only select one level 8, one level 9, etc for each of the questions. In other word, I can't give you all 9's for all of the questions. Sorry...

Answer:

Okay, i see that now. Sorry about that. Just pick the one that is the average answer

Question:

survey?

Answer:

CSA can help you launch a professional marketing campaign in your home town in less than an hour. Agents available to train your marketing staff and subsidize your competitive marketing efforts. Simply email usregcsa[at]microsoft(dot)com and request marketing assistance.

Re: MARKETING - George has been working with this marketing venue for over a year. Microsoft has created wizard driven touchpoints that can help you do marketing now on a full professional scale. You can import your own logo, use Microsoft materials and market to clients in areas where you have the most success, other verticals you are expanding into and even geographic areas.

Partners have found a warm reception to the mailing collateral and the peripherals they send out due to the tight integration with the overall Microsoft marketing effort already in place and the brand recognition that Microsoft already has in the marketplace.

After your marketing pieces hit the street, the CSA team can then provide technical support, tools and help partners follow up on the sale.

This is a great tool to use on a quarterly basis to increase exposure and seed the marketplace with your Partner identity.

Door knocking in Norco CA

Learning how to market in my neighborhood.

I spent the morning and early afternoon yesterday door knocking at businesses in my neighborhood. (92860 United States). It was a very hot day, more precisely 100+ degrees. Fortunately I received some goodwill in the form of a bottles of water from some of the prospects I solicited. All in all, a very enjoyable day.

So why was it interesting? Norco is a unique city in California. It is a small town culture in the big metropolitan area of Los Angeles. Known as Horse Town USA, Norco has gained this moniker because of the density of horses owned and it's history as an equestrian center, Norco still exudes the small town feel in a big town southern California.

What I learned from walking around is that I can walk through the front door of a business in Norco and just say hello... yes, still just say hello these days :). I learned that Norco is unique enough to require me to provide more locale in my marketing pieces for the city. I learned that people can still be friendly on a cold call (maybe only in Norco LOL) if you're open and honest about why you're visting (hi my name is Mark and I'm a Computer Guy).

Some things I need to do to market better in Norco:

  • build Norco specific marketing
    • inform prospects that we're in Norco
    • include Norco symbols (horses, wagon wheels) on print
  • emphasize repair and upgrades over Network systems
    • observed computer use less than 10 units per site (often less than 5)
  • identify larger computer use prospects and build seperate marketing for them based on broader SMB offerings
  • more....

Things I did well yesterday

  • I was friendly
  • I was able to make direct contacts with business owners
  • When I did not make direct contact with business owners, I was able to get their card or their name for followup
    • This is something unique to door knocking (do not find this to be generally true by phone)

Things I can do better

  • get email addresses
    • a lot of local businesses do not put their email addresses on business cards
  • use the opportunities with the owners to build more repoirte
    • it occured to me that in the spirit of goodwill, I might ask local business owners/managers this questions: How can I better market my Computer/Network business here in Norco? I believe this is a beneficial question for three reasons
      • 1 it's a sincere question
      • 2 it draws them in and asks them to take an interest in me and my company (WIGITAL)
      • 3 it goes directly to the source to ask:
        • How do you want to be reached?
        • What do you want to be asked?
        • What are your needs?
        • What will you respond to?
        • What information is useful to you?
  • It also occurs to me that I should be asking better questions to profile these potential clients more accurately such as:
    • how many computers do you use in your business?
    • do you use a Server?
    • do you have a web presence?
    • do you use a company branded email domain?
    • do you have a firewall?
    • what is your backup solution?
  • more to follow....

I'll report back and journal more in another weblog.
